Peripheral Mechanisms of Pain

Linking basic discovery to clinical practice

Welcome to the Shin lab, a passionate group of people studying peripheral mechanisms of pain

Our lab started in September 2023 at the Department of Neurology and Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Ohio State University.

Using a multi-modal approach, we study peripheral mechanisms of pain, focusing on the conditions arising from cancer treatment as side effects in collaboration with several other teams on campus and around the world. By aligning our work in the lab with clinical practice to treat devastating painful conditions, we hope to contribute to solving painful conditions.

We currently focus on understanding the intercellular mechanisms involving sensory neurons, the innate immune system, and skin cells that underlie chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and establishing transdisciplinary approaches for understanding CIPN pathology in patients.

Through our research, our long-term goal is to characterize neuronal mechanisms to inform precision medicine-based care for painful sensory disorders. We also aim to prepare next-generation scientists to navigate and succeed in the rapidly changing world of science.

We had the Inaugural Shin lab Symposium on August 27-28, where we marked 1 year of our lab and reflected on where we are heading next year. It was great to have Benna Li and Madison Smith joining us from New York in person and via Zoom. We also had our second Lab Values Meeting, reminding and updating our values together.

Work with us to link ideas to advance the field

We are collaborating with multiple teams on campus and around the world to effectively understand the complex etiology of painful neuropathies. We would be happy to hear from you to toss ideas and build innovative approaches together to advance our strategies to solve neuropathic pain. We are currently recruiting postdocs and graduate students.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about neuropathy
